Dance is very important to me because I see it as a stress reliever among other things and it’s often what I look forward to most in the day. One of the things I looked into while applying to colleges were the available dance groups on campus. I ended up joining three groups and now I direct one of them and it’s one of my most loved spaces on campus. In terms of its significance, it really just signifies joy and it serves as a form of self expression. Whenever I dance, I don’t feel stressed and I can forget about the worries of academics, and the people I’ve met and had the pleasure of sharing the stage with are just absolutely phenomenal. In Trinidad and Tobago, the twin islands where my family is from, dancing is a big thing. Every year before Easter we have carnival, the biggest one in the Caribbean, and the entire nation celebrates. So dancing is pretty big in my culture, and when I take a look at the things my mother did when she was my age, I see we shared many passios, one of those being dance. So I guess you can say its kind of embedded in me.
